Sodium-Ion vs Lithium-Ion Batteries: Key Differences

Sodium-ion offers abundant raw materials; energy density, cost and life depend on cell design.

Illustrated comparison of sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries

Sodium-ion cells use widely available sodium-based materials and may reduce dependence on lithium supply chains. Lithium-ion batteries remain the established option for many applications where high energy density and a mature manufacturing ecosystem are important.

The trade-off is not a universal claim that one chemistry always charges faster, lasts longer or is safer. Energy density, cycle life, cost and safety depend on the specific electrode materials, electrolyte, cell format and pack engineering. Sodium-ion is being explored especially for stationary storage and other uses where weight is less critical.
